What is aventurine?

Formation and sources of aventurine
Aventurine forms when fine mineral particles, such as fuchsite or hematite, become enclosed in quartz. Those tiny particles create the sparkling effect known as aventurescence. The best-known color is green, thanks to the presence of fuchsite (green mica). Aventurine also occurs in other colors.
The most important sources are in India, especially for the green variety. Other sources are Brazil, China, Tanzania and Russia, where other color varieties are sometimes found as well.
The history of aventurine
The name aventurine comes from the Italian “a ventura”, meaning “by chance”. It refers to a glittering glass created in 18th-century Venice, when copper particles accidentally ended up in molten glass. The natural mineral that closely resembled it was later given the same name.
The use of aventurine as a gemstone goes back much further. In ancient Tibet the stone was worked into statues and jewelry. In other cultures aventurine was considered a stone of prosperity and luck, and was worn as a talisman for important undertakings.
That meaning has stayed. Today aventurine is still associated with opportunity, courage and opening new paths, and green aventurine is one of the best-known lucky stones in the world.
