Grounding Mouse Mat for Your Desk, 25 x 30 cm
A sturdy mat in conductive PU leather that you connect to the protective earth of a wall socket with the cord supplied. It gives you a grounded surface under your hands while you work at your desk. With a cord of about 4.5 metres, built-in safety resistor and earthing plug. Plug for EU sockets (type E and F); elsewhere use an earthed travel adapter.

Do you spend long hours at your desk and are you interested in grounding, also known as earthing? This grounding mat gives you an earthed surface exactly where your hands rest all day. At 25 x 30 cm it is the size of a generous mouse mat, and a cord connects it to the protective earth of an ordinary wall socket.
How the grounding mat works
The top is made of black PU leather with a conductive layer. A metal press stud sits in one corner: you click the cord onto it and plug the other end into the wall socket with the earthing plug. The plug only connects to the protective earth, so there is no mains voltage on the mat, and it contains no electronic components. The anti-slip rubber base keeps the mat in place while you move your mouse.
Safely connected
The cord contains a 100 kΩ resistor. It limits the current if a fault ever occurs in the electrical installation. Only use the mat with the cord supplied and in a socket with protective earth. If you are not sure whether your socket is properly earthed, check it with a socket tester or ask an electrician.

Care
Always unplug the mat first. Remove dust and crumbs with a vacuum cleaner, then wipe the top with a slightly damp cloth and clean water. Let the mat dry before you connect it again, and do not use alcohol or cleaning products: they damage the conductive layer. To store or carry the mat, roll it up loosely and do not fold it. With normal use it lasts around five years.
Frequently asked questions about the grounding mat
What is a grounding mat?
A grounding mat, or earthing mat, has a conductive top that is connected by a cord to the protective earth of your electrical installation. Static charge that builds up on the mat is carried away to earth through the cord.
Is there any electricity on the grounding mat?
No. The earthing plug only connects to the protective earth of the socket; the pins are not connected. The cord also contains a 100 kΩ safety resistor.
Does the plug fit every socket?
The mat only works in a socket with protective earth. The plug fits type E and F sockets, as used in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and France. In countries with other sockets, such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland and the United States, use a travel adapter that carries the earth through. Not every adapter does: check it with an EU socket tester plugged into the adapter. In a socket without protective earth there is no connection to earth.
How do I check that the mat is properly earthed?
Use a socket tester to check that your socket has a working earth contact. If the plug is in a socket with protective earth and the cord is clicked onto the snap connector of the mat, the mat is connected to the earth.
How do I clean the grounding mat?
With a vacuum cleaner and a slightly damp cloth with clean water. Not in the washing machine, and no alcohol or cleaning products.
