Fear is a feeling that affects us all. It wants to protect us, but it also often paralyzes us. We withdraw, procrastinate, or don't dare to do something—while deep down we actually long for movement, growth, and freedom. In this blog, we explore how fear works—not only from the outside, but also from the inside. We also briefly consider how it manifests itself in your body and how it influences your thinking, but also what you can do to counteract it. We take you through the ideas behind our intention card “Don't let fear win” and show you how curiosity can be a surprisingly powerful antidote. Curiosity invites you to keep looking, feeling, discovering – even when you're not sure about everything.

What is fear and why does it hold you back?

Fear is often seen as a negative emotion, but it has a clear function: it wants to protect you. However, that protection does not always work in your favor. Fear can turn into an invisible chain—a force that holds you back and controls you, often without you even realizing it. Sometimes that force comes from outside: social pressure, expectations, other people's opinions. But just as often, fear comes from within. Thoughts like “I'm not good enough,” “What if I fail?” or “I don't know if I can do this” are inner voices that can keep you small. No matter how well-intentioned, they limit your freedom of movement and keep you from growing.

How fear manifests physically

Fear doesn't just live in your head—you can also feel it in your body. A rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, tension in your shoulders, or a knot in your stomach. You may feel restless, sleep poorly, or freeze up. These physical reactions are not a weakness; they are alarm signals from your system. They want to tell you something: that you are on edge, that you perceive something as threatening. By taking these signals seriously – without immediately acting on them – you can better understand what is going on inside you.

Don't let fear win

At Meditech, we believe in the power of intentions—a conscious moment of reflecting on how you feel and which direction you want to move in. We have an intention card (from Oscar, age 9) with the message: “Don't let fear win.” It seems like a simple sentence, but it has a big impact. It invites you not to look away from fear, but to face it. Not to fight it, but to understand it and let it go. By placing a daily reminder of this intention in a place you visit often—your desk, your mirror, your bedside table—you give yourself an anchor point. A gentle nudge to not let fear guide you, but rather trust and curiosity.

Curiosity as an antidote

Where fear wants to hold you back, curiosity invites you to move forward. It is a gentle but powerful force that says, “What if I try?” Curiosity opens the door to discovery, learning, and growth. It requires no certainty, only willingness. Being curious does not mean you are not afraid of anything—it means that despite that fear, you continue to look, ask questions, and try.

Children are often naturally good at this. They ask endless questions, often try new things without shame, and look at the world with wonder. As we get older, that open attitude sometimes seems to disappear. Fear takes the place of curiosity: what will others think, what if I fail, what if I lose myself? Of course, this does not apply to everyone, but it shows that curiosity is something we can practise again – and trust again. It is by no means a childish trait, but an attitude to life that can be of great value in adulthood.

The path from fear to curiosity

The path from fear to curiosity is not a leap, but a series of small, courageous steps. It starts with acknowledging that you are afraid – and that that is okay. Then you can make room for a different attitude: openness. Curiosity does not require big changes, but small movements. Daring to ask a question. Trying something new, no matter how small. Examining a limiting thought instead of immediately believing it. With each step, you break a piece of the chain. You let go of what was holding you back and make room for who you really are. There is freedom in curiosity—not because you no longer have fear, but because you no longer let it control you.

Trust your curiosity

Fear is part of life, but it doesn't have to define your life. By allowing curiosity, you make room for growth, connection, and self-confidence. It's a choice you can make every day—sometimes with complete conviction, sometimes with a little doubt. But every time you choose openness instead of withdrawal, you free yourself a little more. The intention “Don't let fear win” is not a command, but an invitation: to look with an open heart at what is holding you back and to trust your inner resilience. Curiosity is your compass. Freedom is the way.
